Think hair extensions are all about length?
When we mention hair extensions in the salon, we can almost see what some clients are thinking.
“Lovely… but I don’t want really long hair.”
Fair enough. But some of our favourite extension work isn’t about length at all, explains Ema.
It’s often about making fine ends look fuller. Adding a little more hair around the sides. Giving a bob a thicker, stronger shape. Or helping you get past that awkward point where your hair will grow longer… but starts looking a bit straggly when it does.
In other words, extensions can be about making more of the hair you already have.
A little can make a big difference
This is where chatting to your stylist can really help. You don’t necessarily need lots of extensions or a big transformation. Sometimes adding hair in just the right places is enough to make your whole hairstyle look better.
And that’s the beauty of it. Your hair still looks like your hair. Just fuller, thicker and with a little more oomph.
So we’ll look at where your hair looks thin, what happens when you try to grow it and what you’d love to change. Because sometimes there’s only so much we can achieve with a haircut when it’s the natural thickness of your hair that’s holding you back.
What could they do for your hair?
Next time you’re in the salon, tell us what bugs you about your hair.
Maybe it’s those ends that always look wispy. The sides that never seem to catch up with the back. Or simply that you’d love your hair to look thicker.
We’ll tell you whether extensions could help. And, just as importantly, whether they’re right for your hair.
“And if you’ve a wedding, holiday or big event coming up, tell us. A little extra hair can give us much more to play with when we’re styling it,” says Ema.
Living with extensions
We also need to think about the condition of your hair, how much maintenance you’re happy with and what they’ll involve between appointments.
Ask us about that too. How do you look after them at home? How often will you need to come back? What will they cost to maintain? Can you still style your hair in the way you normally do?
We’d much rather you know exactly what’s involved before you decide.
So, if you’ve always filed extensions under long hair, not for me, it might be time to think again.
Next time you’re in, ask us what a little extra hair in the right place could do for yours.
